Pieter van de Velde is archaeologist and anthropologist. He became affili-ated with the Early State Society early in his career. He then wrote a few articles and co-edited several books on that topic (Early State Economics, Pivot Politics, etc.), later to turn his attention to other pursuits in Indonesian and Mediterranean archaeology, without severing his relationships with the Early State Society alto-gether.
